Innovation and entrepreneurship in Bodø and the surrounding area 1850-1940
In the latter half of the 19th century, Bodø underwent a strong urbanization. This development did not come about by itself – it was driven by, among other things, innovation and entrepreneurship. An often underestimated driving force during this period was women, who, especially after 1900, played an increasingly important and visible role in business.
Behind urban development, trade and new jobs we find people who dared to take risks. In this lecture, Professor Steinar Aas will take a closer look at how business developed from 1850 to 1940, with a special focus on female entrepreneurship.

In the fall of 2025, Nordlandsmuseet opened its self-produced exhibition "Made in Bodø" at the Bodø City Museum, telling the story of the city's industrial heritage. Here you can learn about workshops and factories throughout the 20th century, and reflect on how local industry, production and working life have left their mark - in the city, in society and in people.
Made in Bodø is more than an exhibition – it is an arena for reflection, memories and social debate. Here you can reminisce about the city's industrial heyday and look at old objects with new eyes.
