Nordlandsmuseet has museum facilities in all of Salten's nine municipalities - Bodø, Fauske, Saltdal , Sorfold, Steigen , Hamarøy, Beiarn, Gildeskål and Meløy. What they all have in common is that they collect, preserve, research and communicate Salten's 10,000-year history.

Nordlandsmuseet works to preserve cultural monuments and physical environments of cultural-historical significance, as well as the protection of objects, written sources, images and oral tradition.

Nordlandsmuseet currently manages a total of 20 museum facilities with collections spread across over 140 buildings, approximately 50,000 objects, approximately 280,000 photographs and approximately 400 metres of shelving with archives.

The museums are divided into year-round and seasonal facilities. The seasonal facilities are otherwise open on request and for events throughout the year.

The organization

The Nordlandsmuseet Foundation is a consolidated museum with 20 unique museum facilities in all nine municipalities in Salten.

The Nordlandsmuseet was founded on 20.12.2002 as a result of the state-initiated consolidation process in Report to the Storting no. 22 (2000) Sources of knowledge and experience , and then took over the museum operations in the nine municipalities in Salten.

The foundation has the following purposes:

IN

The Nordlandsmuseet Foundation will strengthen knowledge about the cultural history of Salten through management, research, dissemination and renewal. In this context, the museum will work with cultural monuments and physical environments of cultural historical significance. Furthermore, the museum will ensure good collection management that includes buildings, objects, archives, photos and intangible cultural heritage. As a result of this, the museum will operate a versatile and inclusive dissemination to different target groups.

II

The Nordlandsmuseet Foundation will be a center of expertise for museum activities in the region, and will emphasize promoting coordination and cooperation in cultural preservation work locally and regionally. The museum will also engage in the development of museum functions at the county level, and in participating in national and international museum networks.
