Visits and practical information
Which museums are open all year round?
The Bodø City Museum , The Jekt Trade Museum and the Hamsun Center are open all year round, but with seasonal variations in opening hours and shorter periods closed for maintenance.
Kjerringøy trading post has a longer summer season than most facilities and is also open on Saturdays for much of the year.
Sulitjelma Visitor Mine opens when conditions permit after winter. This may vary from year to year, but regular mine tours are run for much of the year.
Other facilities have fixed opening hours during the summer season, but can still be visited outside of season, either as a group visit or individual visit by appointment. Information about all possibilities can be found on the individual facility's page at nordlandsmuseet .
Can I visit seasonal museums outside of summer?

Are the museums universally designed?
Availability varies between our facilities. The City Museum in Bodø , The Jekt Trade Museum and the Hamsun Center are fully accessible with elevators, accessible toilets and ramps. Kjerringøy trading post and several of our smaller facilities are partially accessible. Some of our historic facilities have limited accessibility due to the nature and age of the buildings.
Sulitjelma Visitor Mine is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. For safety reasons, all visitors must be able to walk and evacuate without assistance.

Where are the museums located?
Nordlandsmuseet has 20 facilities spread across all nine municipalities in Salten in Northern Norway. See a map of all our facilities.
Where do I buy tickets?
Entrance tickets are purchased at the box office at each facility. Tickets for events are available either at the door or online. Check the individual event for information on ticket purchases.

Hair Nordlandsmuseet an available collection?
Yes. Nordlandsmuseet manages a collection of around 50,000 objects, 280,000 photographs and 400 shelf meters of archive material from the Salten region. Parts of the collection are available digitally at digitaltmuseum.no . At nordlandsmuseet .no/samling we regularly publish stories from the collection, where we delve into individual objects, people and events from the region's cultural history. Researchers and others who want access to the archive or collection can contact us directly.

How can I contact you?

Email is often the best way to reach us, as many of us work in the field with tours and other tasks. We respond to inquiries as soon as we can. The switchboard is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

Booking
What can I book with? Nordlandsmuseet ?
You can book individual and group tours, school and kindergarten visits, conferences and meetings, as well as private events at selected facilities. Check the page for each facility for detailed information , or visit our booking page for a comprehensive overview.

What kind of private events can I book?
Several of our facilities can be booked for private events in historic surroundings. The offer varies between the museums and is adapted to the type of event and needs. Examples are parties, confirmations, christenings, adventure dinners, memorial services, lunches, weddings.
Which museums offer private events?
At The Jekt Trade Museum you can arrange parties, confirmations, baptisms or naming ceremonies, adventure dinners, lunches and memorial services.
At the Hamsun Center you can arrange smaller meetings with a specially created menu.
Kjerringøy trading post offers a unique setting for weddings in historic surroundings.
Løp gård offers rental of the farm for private events.
Is catering included at conferences and private events?
At the Bodø City Museum , The Jekt Trade Museum , Kjerringøy trading post and Hamsunsenteret we offer catering in addition to the premises rental. For some packages, catering is included in the price. Different food options are clarified in connection with booking. At Fauske Folk Museum and Løp gård the tenant must arrange their own catering.

Can we visit the museum in connection with the event?
Regular admission is included when renting space at the City Museum in Bodø , The Jekt Trade Museum and the Hamsun Center. At all facilities that offer room rental, you can also book a guided tour for an additional fee.
How do I submit a request for a conference or private event?

What can you do in Nordland if you are interested in history?
Nordlandsmuseet manages cultural history from Salten, a region in Nordland, with museums and facilities in nine municipalities: Bodø , Fauske , Saltdal , Sørfold , Steigen , Hamarøy , Beiarn , Gildeskål and Meløy . Is there anything to do in Salten for children and families?
Yes. Nordlandsmuseet facilities welcome families and children at all 20 of its museums. Children under 18 have free regular admission. Several of the facilities offer extra activities for children, including Family Thursday at The Jekt Trade Museum , guided tours for children at Kjerringøy trading post and a locomotive ride into the mountains at Sulitjelma visitor mine .
Is there war history to explore in Nordland?
Yes. Nordlandsmuseet manages several facilities with direct connections to the Second World War. The Blood Road Museum in Saltdal tells the story of the tens of thousands of Eastern European prisoners of war who were sent north to build roads and railways under brutal conditions. Batterie Dietl on Engeløya in Steigen is one of Europe's largest remaining coastal fortifications from the war.
What can you experience along the coast in Nordland?
Nordlandsmuseet manages several facilities related to coastal culture and trade history. Kjerringøy trading post , Ørnes trading post and The Jekt Trade Museum all tell the story of the coastal culture that connected Northern Norway to the rest of Europe through the trade in stockfish and clipfish.
Is there Sami cultural history to experience in Salten?
Yes. Nordlandsmuseet manages several facilities with connections to Sami culture and history. Crofter's Farm Kjelvik in Sørfold is a Sami homestead where four siblings lived together until the last one passed away in 1967. Nordlandsmuseet is also working to develop a Sami program across several of the facilities.
Arranger Nordlandsmuseet events that are open to the public?
Yes. Nordlandsmuseet regularly organizes events at our facilities throughout Salten. This includes exhibition openings, lectures and professional presentations, family activities, concerts and social events. Some events are free, others have their own ticket price. Can you visit the Nordlandsmuseet facilities in winter or during the midnight sun season?
Yes. The City Museum in Bodø , The Jekt Trade Museum and the Hamsun Center are open all year round. In winter you can experience the Northern Lights and the dark hours combined with indoor exhibitions and events. During the midnight sun season, from May to August, most of our seasonal facilities open. Kjerringøy trading post and ours Folk Museum in the midnight sun is an experience in itself. Museum visits are a good option on rainy days. In Bodø you can visit The Jekt Trade Museum and the Bodø City Museum , both of which offer indoor exhibitions, presentations and events that can be experienced regardless of the weather and season.

Is it possible to take day trips from Bodø to museums in Salten?
Yes. All of Nordlandsmuseet's 20 facilities in Salten can be reached on a day trip from Bodø . Kjerringøy trading post can be reached by car and ferry in under two hours, with Løp farm as a natural stop on the way. Saltdal Folk Museum and the Blood Road Museum in Rognan can be reached by train in 55 minutes. Gildeskål church site is about an hour away. Bodø by car. The longest is Hamarøy , which is located about three hours from Bodø .
What to see and do in Hamarøy ?
Hamarøy is known as Knut Hamsun's home town. Here you will find the Hamsun Center, Norway's national center for Hamsun's life and literature, and Knut Hamsun's childhood home in Hamsund. Also nearby is Hamarøy Folk Museum , a historical trading post from 1845. All three facilities can be visited in one day.
What can you do in Fauske and Sulitjelma?
IN Fauske and Sulitjelma you will find four of the Nordlandsmuseet's facilities. At Fauske Folk Museum you will learn about the history of clothing and daily life in Salten. Sjønstå farm is a protected cluster farm from the 17th century, the only one of its kind north of Dovre. In Sulitjelma you can visit the mining museum and take the original locomotive into the mountain at the visitor mine .
