Saltdal Folk Museum
On Saltdal Folk Museum you can wander into the atmosphere of the 19th century, from Skippergården's chandeliers to Myrlandstua's mine. Among the log houses, gunners, Nordland boats, schools and furniture, you will arrive at a bygone era that still exists.
The main building of the farm is Skippergården, which was the headquarters of the Ellingsen merchant family from 1751 to 1899. In our café and museum shop you can enjoy our popular sweltering with møsbrømkrem, while our guides tell you stories about the yachting trade, the grocery store, the liquor trade, the rise and fall of the Ellingsen family.

History of the museum
Saltnes is the place where the river from the small valley meets the fjord and the big world. This meant that during the 17th century Saltnes became the center of the village with a church, market, grocery store and jetty.
To Saltnes, Sami people came all the way from Arvidsjaur in Sweden with silver, reindeer hides, meat and fists. The mountain people returned with flour, tobacco, spirits and coffee. The village's farmers also came here to trade flour, salt, spices, tobacco, spirits, rope and tools for the winter Lofoten fishing.
The only buildings left from Saltnes' heyday are Skippergården and the nearest storehouse. The other houses were taken from the shore at Rognan, mountain farms to the east, hamlets to the south and a school building from Dverset along the Saltenfjord to the west.
From 1751-1899, Saltnes, with its farm, servants and shipping, was run by the Ellingsen family, one of Nordland's richest merchant families. In May 1899, the farm was sold to the Ludvig Johansen Breimo family and his wife Aldis. Saltdal The municipality took over the Saltnes mill in 1975 and from 1977 the place has been Folk Museum and museum.
