EDNAMA SHATTO // The Hamsun Days KICKOFF
Film concert "Ednama sjatto" - new Sami music for the silent film " Growth of the Soil " from 1921
Premiered in 2024, also at Hamsundagene's opening event. A commissioned work for The Hamsun Days and the Hamsun Center.
The silent film « Growth of the Soil » from 1921, is based on the book of the same name by Knut Hamsun. The same book for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. The book is an agricultural epic about the farmer Isak Selanraa who works his way up as a farmer in what is described as untouched wilderness. The book describes the Sami in a negative and racist way. This has recently become a major problem.
By setting the silent film to modern Sami music, it gives a counterbalance and a new dimension to the story. We call it "a Sami takeover. A moving experience that touches many senses and gives a new perspective."
Musician, composer and Hamarøyværing, Svein Schultz was commissioned in 2024, gathering a fantastic group of musical artists and co-composers to create and perform the unique work.
