After Lars Levi Læstadius' discovery of rock juniper in 1825, many botanists would follow in his footsteps in what is now Junkerdal National Park. With their discovery of Greenland asters in 1854, three students from Uppsala made the Junkerdal Mountains world famous.

Literary scholar Ronald Nystad-Rusaanes from Saltdal tells the whole story of rare plants, the bear colony in Skaiti and the first tourist trip from Junkerdal to Merkesnes in the 1880s.
