On May 21st, we will return to the late 19th century – to a time when emperors and kings sailed along the Norwegian coast, and a pilot from Sømna became a key figure in a meeting between small coastal communities and the great world history.
This fall, Tor Erlend Nordhuus, a native of Sømn, published the novel "Hohenzollerens siste los", a story about his great-grandfather Johan Parelius Nordhuus – the man who for 25 years was Emperor Wilhelm II's personal pilot on voyages along the Norwegian coast.
Through the book we not only get a portrait of a sailor with unusual courage and professional authority, but also a vivid picture of coastal culture, honor, fear and human pride in the face of one of Europe's most powerful men at the time.
The book is the result of many years of research and a family journey of discovery. It brings to light a forgotten story from Sør-Helgeland – a story that once filled newspaper columns both in Norway and abroad, but which later disappeared into silence.
