A creative and educational event about life beneath the ocean surface

- We look forward to welcoming children and adults to The Jekt Trade Museum. This will be a fun way to learn about life on the shore and how we can take care of nature along the coast , says Magnus Sivertsen Sørvig at The Jekt Trade Museum .

An event that combines knowledge, action and creativity

Sea urchins have been grazing large areas of kelp forests along the coast of Northern Norway in recent decades. Through the workshop, children learn why this is a challenge for ecosystems, while also exploring how sea urchins can become a valuable resource.

We also put on our boots and go out to the shore to remove sea urchins that threaten life underwater. Finally, we gather for a sea urchin hackathon. How can we use the resource we have collected? Can it be lampshades, candlesticks or something else strange? Among other things, the children get to make sea urchin lanterns from real sea urchin shells.

What do the children learn?

  • Why are sea urchins a challenge to ecosystems?

  • How sea urchins can become a valuable resource

What activities can they take part in?

  • Picking sea urchins

  • Make sea urchin lanterns from real sea urchin shells
