The childhood home in Hamsund

From the 1st. July You can visit Knut Hamsun's childhood home, just a 10-minute drive from the Hamsun Center. Here you can visit the house that he and his family moved to in 1862.

In the childhood home you will be greeted by a facilitator who invites you to join in a story telling session around the table over a cup of coffee. The story we tell is about Hamsun's journey from his birthplace in Gudbrandsdalen, to his upbringing in Hamarøy and teenage life in Nordland, until at the age of nineteen he took the step into the world to become a writer.

A visit to Hamsun's childhood home provides an insight into the author's childhood universe. Up the narrow staircase we find the old boy's room and Knut's peg where the letter "K" is carved. In Tora's room we get a closer look at his mother's life. In the living room, Father Peder's sewing machine stands in the nook. Several objects in the house were used and made by Knut or his family.
