Meløy Village Museum takes you back to an important chapter in local history, where you can learn more about the development of the school, the lives of the students and the fishermen.

Walk through historic classrooms in an authentic school building from 1923, and get a vivid insight into what schooling and boarding life was like for children in the countryside. Feel the atmosphere and learn about the lives of the children who lived at the school for 14 days before going home to their families.

For decades, the museum has been telling local school history. Here you can see old school supplies, learn about teaching methods and imagine the lives of the children who lived and learned here. In the basement, an exciting exhibition awaits you that takes you into the world of fish farmers. A combination of fishing and farming that shaped life along the coast for centuries. Here you can see how local communities survived by exploiting both the sea and the land's resources.

History of the museum

Meløy Village Museum has a long history, which begins with the work of a young man named Christian Stene who got the job as a teacher in Meløy in 1866. He eventually wanted to establish a permanent school to avoid the traveling school system, and in 1876 he bought property in Dalen and had the white house moved here from Namdalen, where the teaching took place.

Over time, the small Nordlandshuset proved to be too small for the growing population, and in 1923 the yellow school building was erected, which is today the Meløy Village Museum. Here the students lived in 14-day shifts while they received instruction, before going home to their families for 14 days. This made it possible for children from rural areas to receive a more continuous education. The school was in operation until 1972, and the building was later used as a road office and teachers' residence. In 1976, exactly 100 years after the first permanent school was established, the site opened as a museum.
