Nordlandsmuseet takes over the operation of Øvergården at Sjønstå farm
Nordlandsmuseet is proud to announce that as of January 1, 2025, we have taken over the operation of Øvergården at Sjønstå farm.
– This historic farm, which is one of Nordland's most unique cultural monuments, has a rich history that stretches back to 1665. With its characteristic courtyard-shaped farm and protection under the Cultural Heritage Act in 2006, Sjønstå Farm represents an important part of Norway's cultural heritage, says Ole Furset, director of Nordlandsmuseet.
The mayor's support for the takeover
Mayor of Fauske municipality , Marlen Rendall Berg, is looking forward to seeing Sjønstå farm have a new future under the auspices of the Nordlandsmuseet:
- Sjønstå farm is a hidden gem in Fauske municipality from the 17th century. The only preserved and protected cluster farm north of Dovre. The farm is unique and famous from, among other things, the blockbuster film Sulis 1907. Many children and families have gotten a taste of bygone times and lowered their pulse when visiting the farm.
She praises the efforts of volunteers and enthusiasts who have looked after the farm until now:
– Since the 1970s, Sjønstå farm has been looked after by volunteers and the Sjønstå farm Foundation. There are countless people who have been involved over the years, and some strong enthusiasts have been involved a lot and for a long time. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who has contributed for their efforts!
About the future, Berg says:
– It has been a long and thorough process to find a good solution for the future. Now the Nordlandsmuseet will be able to convey the history and make the place accessible, while at the same time maintaining the building and the area in a responsible manner. We are very pleased with that from Fauske on the municipality's part, and we believe it secures the farm well for the future with protection through use.

A living story
Sjønstå farm is idyllically located by Øvrevann and has been a hub for agriculture, fishing and trade for centuries.
The farm has been in operation right up to modern times, with Øvergården being the last active use until 1973. The farm's history reflects both local farm life and connections to larger trade networks, including through the launch service to Bergen and participation in the Lofoten fishing industry.
Today the farm consists of a total of 22 buildings, many of which are under restoration. They represent a typical Nordland farmyard from the time before the 20th century, a farm landscape that is now rarely preserved. Sjønstå farm also has a protected inland area with terraced fields that testify to the frugal and sustainable agricultural practices of earlier times.
Collaboration for the future
Nordlandsmuseet looks forward to taking over the baton from the Sjønstå Farm Foundation. We look forward to continuing the work of preserving and communicating the farm's rich history. Our goal is to make Sjønstå Farm a living communication center that attracts both locals and visitors from Norway and abroad, concludes Furset.
