Through photographs and knitted garments from the Nordlandsmuseet's collections, conservator Ida Beate Otterlei provides an insight into the history of knitting in Norway.
The lecture takes us from simple everyday garments made from homespun yarn to richly decorated lice cardigans, and shows how the craft became an important part of Norwegian cultural heritage. Particular attention is paid to pattern knitting in the period 1930–1945 – a time characterized by both creativity and scarcity – where tradition, identity and available resources left clear traces in the garments.
