A common thread - Norwegian knitting traditions

Summer's colorful exhibition at Beiarn Folk Museum is about knitting. A common thread in the exhibition are patterns from the book Norwegian Knitting Patterns by Annichen Sibbern (1929). This book helped to elevate knitting as a traditional Norwegian craft, and not least to disseminate the patterns further. We have opened the large treasure chest of knitted garments in the Nordlandsmuseet's collection. Here we find everything from seal mittens to marius sweaters.

Will you join us in knitting Nordland's longest scarf? We may not be able to beat the world record of five kilometers, but maybe a tenth? In the exhibition we also have a giant knitting pattern that will be fun for children to try out.

With needles and yarn – Norwegian knitting traditions seen through the Nordlandsmuseet's collections

Through photographs and knitted garments from the Nordlandsmuseet's collections, conservator Ida Beate Otterlei gives an insight into the history of knitting in Norway. The lecture takes us from simple everyday garments made from homespun yarn to richly decorated lice cardigans, and shows how the craft became an important part of Norwegian cultural heritage.

Particular attention is paid to pattern knitting in the period 1930–1950 – a time characterized by both creativity and scarcity – where tradition, identity and available resources left clear traces in the garments.
