Textiles have been crucial to humans' ability to live and travel in the harsh climate of the north. Knowledge of fibers, materials, and techniques provided warmth and protection, and made it possible to travel to sea.
In the lecture "Knots on the move", textile artist Monika Sunnanå Ravnanger takes you into the history of the thousand-year-old floss textiles. Here, both knowledge, knots and techniques have migrated between people and places, including through trade and clothing in the North Atlantic area. Central to this is the Icelandic varafellen - a distinctive textile and important trade item.
The lecture also discusses Monika's own travels, research, reconstructions, and how the encounter with historical techniques has inspired her artistic work. This knowledge forms the basis for the works "Surviving", which are shown in the exhibition OF HER HANDS - Textile Care Stories from the Sea.
The exhibition AV HENNES HENDER opens on Saturday 19 September and is created by Monika Sunnanå Ravnanger and Vibeke Steinsholm. Through textile works they explore cultural heritage, care, survival and people's close relationship with the sea.

Monika Sunnanå Ravnanger is a textile artist and traditional craftswoman with particular expertise in the uppstad weaving. She works as a textile craftswoman at Osterøy Museum, the Museum Center in Hordaland, where she preserves and communicates traditional craft techniques.
For Monika, knowledge is not just about knowing, but about being able to and having the knowledge in your hands. This way, old techniques can be carried forward, both as they have been used throughout history and as a starting point for new artistic expressions.
Monika has a master's degree from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and has for many years immersed herself in our textile cultural heritage.
