Experience a rare side of Northern Norway, and travel back in time on idyllic Gildeskål church site, where the medieval church from 1130 with original furnishings from the 18th century is the main attraction.

Feel the presence of history in the walls, of medieval architecture and learn about the history of faith in an idyllic setting. With a distance from Bodø In just over an hour by car, you travel through landscapes with majestic mountains, islands, small fjords and the open ocean close by.

From June 22 to August 9, Gildeskål Church site open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last admission is at 4:00 p.m. It is not possible to freely enter the churches – all visits are guided.

Guided tour of the medieval church Here you can learn about the church's history, architecture and social life, told through what we can see in the church today. The tour is offered in Norwegian and English. The church is accessible to wheelchair users.

Guided tour of the church site We follow human activity at Gildeskål from the year 200, with burial mounds from the Iron Age, traces of stone extraction on the rocky cliffs, distinctive place names and the cemetery. The tour provides a greater understanding of why the church site was built here. The tour is in Norwegian. Please note that there is limited access for people with reduced mobility.

Lunch concert in Gildeskål Medieval church

Nordlandsmuseet and Gildeskål Parish office invites you to a concert in Gildeskål medieval church, followed by lunch in the parlor in the rectory. Organist Piotr Repnik presents a varied selection of Norwegian traditional music, bridal marches and Gildeskål's own hymn writer Elias Blix. It is set for an atmospheric experience in the medieval church, and pleasant socializing after the concert.
