Northern Norway has distinguished itself with very creative choices of first names. Professor Emeritus Gulbrand Alhaug at the Department of Linguistics, UiT, will Steigen library to give a lecture on the choice of first names in Northern Norway over the last 150 years.
Bodø Biennale: Performance Studies in Sápmi
Performance Studies in Sápmi is a festival for politically engaged performance art, initiated in 2024 as part of Marija Griniuk's postdoctoral research on the curation of politically charged performance art. The 2026 edition focuses on meetings between different generations of performance artists and researchers working on political performance and Sámi contexts.
From the kitchen corner, humorist Kristian juggles his own interpretation of Hamsun's Nobel Prize-winning novel with anecdotes, readings and stories. Aided only by the kitchen utensils he has at hand.
Welcome to the exhibition opening with light refreshments.

The summer season at the Hamsun Center begins on June 13th. The center will be open every day, and we will start the daily program where you can, among other things, participate in an architectural walk and attend this year's lecture on Knut Hamsun. The summer season lasts until August 16th.

Fauske Folk Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 AM–4:00 PM from June 16 to August 15.

In a week it will break out again Hamarøy with the cultural festival The Hamsun Days . This year's festival, which has the subtitle "The Ring is Over", has a packed program that will both challenge and embrace the audience in the very best way!
Nordlandsmuseet has received a grant from the Arts Council of Norway's trainee scheme to hire a full-time trainee. From 1 January 2027, Irena Hishchynska will take on the role to strengthen the collection work.
Every year receives Nordlandsmuseet inquiries from people who want to donate objects, photographs or other objects to our collections. Such gifts are valuable, they can fill gaps in the story we tell, or supplement what we already have.

Little did Lars Larsen know when he came over the mountains from Sweden that his new home in Norway would become a cultural monument and museum. Little did he know that the small living room would one day be visited by thousands of people – from schoolchildren to the Crown Prince and Princess themselves.
From 8 to 12 June, Head of Department Marija Griniuk, Head of Communication Magnus Sivertsen Sørvig and Museum Director Barbro Laxaa presented a research paper at the Design Research Society conference (DRS 2026) in Edinburgh. DRS is an international organisation that promotes research in education, art and practice, and the conference brings together academics, practitioners and researchers from all over the world.
Kjerringoy trading post is one of Norway's best preserved trading posts from the 19th century. You can cycle here from Bodø city center in one day, through one of the region's most beautiful coastal landscapes.
Via Querinissima is officially certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. This means that The Jekt Trade Museum in Bodø is now part of a European cultural network that stretches from Venice to Northern Norway.
May 18 is International Museum Day, and this year the day is about how museums can build bridges between people across culture, society and geography. Nordlandsmuseet marks the day with a 50% discount on entrance tickets at Kjerringøy trading post , City Museum in Bodø and The Jekt Trade Museum from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd May.
From May 13th you can once again take the original mining locomotive 1.6 kilometers into Sulitjelma Mountain. Sulitjelma Visitor Mine opens for a new season, and experienced mining guides are ready to share stories about life as a miner in the 1900s.
In June, academics, artists, social actors, local residents and researchers will gather at Røst and in Bodø to explore the concept of "hospitality." A project inspired by a story from the 15th century.
Marija Griniuk, Head of Department South at Nordlandsmuseet , has published a scientific article in the international journal The International Journal of the Arts in Society . The article was published on March 26, 2026 and is based on the work on the exhibition First Strike City at the City Museum in Bodø .
From March 28 to April 4, the market is open every day from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a café and a stall. A week of activities for all ages awaits you, from candle casting and egg painting to music quizzes, historical tours and family Easter. Keep an eye out for the Easter eggs hidden around the area. Count all the ones you find and compete for prizes.
Mengyao Xia is a PhD student in social design at Kyushu University in Japan. Her research explores aesthetic democracy and material-based participatory methods in AI-mediated visual culture. During her stay at the City Museum in Bodø As a guest curator, she has worked practically in the exhibition room with map material related to Hans Ragnar Mathisen, and describes the experience as an important meeting between theory and practice.
Museum educators Eirin Edvardsen and Lasse Frøsgård have been touring schools and kindergartens in recent weeks with the performance “How the Reindeer Got Blue Claws”.
A meeting at a seminar during the Insomnia festival in Tromsø was the starting point for a long-term collaboration between artist Hans Ragnar Mathisen and Taiwanese, Tromsø-based artist Lin Pei-Han. Now the collaboration is highlighted in connection with the exhibition Chronology of Urgencies at the City Museum in Bodø .
Nordlandsmuseet is looking for mediators and summer hosts for several of our museums in the summer season 2026. The position is suitable for those who enjoy working with people, mediation and the public, and who want a summer job in a historical setting.

Nordlandsmuseet has hired Monica Celius as the new director of the Hamsun Center in Hamarøy – a center dedicated to the life and writings of Knut Hamsun. Since its opening in 2009, the Hamsun Center has established itself as a significant cultural institution, both nationally and internationally.
Story of the month
Outside the City Museum in Prinsens gate stands a 3.55-meter-high stone block. It is a monolithic stone from the Early Iron Age, erected between 1,500 and 2,500 years ago.

About the Nordlandsmuseet
The Nordlandsmuseet Foundation collects, preserves, researches and exhibits Salten's 10,000-year history. We work to preserve cultural monuments, physical environments, objects, written sources, images and oral tradition, and make our collection available for everyone.
We manage 20 museum facilities spread over 140 buildings, around 50,000 objects, approximately 280,000 photos and 400 metres of shelving with archives. The museums are located in all nine municipalities of Salten: Bodø , Fauske , Saltdal , Sørfold , Steigen , Hamarøy , Beiarn , Gildeskål and Meløy .
